What is occupational therapy?
Occupational therapy is the only profession that helps people across the lifespan to do the things they want and need to do through the therapeutic use of daily activities (occupations). Occupational therapy practitioners enable people of all ages to live life to its fullest by helping them promote health, and prevent—or live better with—injury, illness, or disability.
How can our occupational therapists help you?
Up to 40% of people with a head injury experience visual disturbances as a result. Since approximately half of the brain is involved with vision, experiencing a traumatic event will likely cause some visual difficulty.
After a head injury, it is also common for people to experience problems with cognition. Cognition includes memory, attention, language, planning and processing.
Our therapists are trained to treat both cognitive and visual deficits and will help you regain independence through client-centered activities. At NDBC we use a series of tests and screening tools to measure any cognitive and/or visual deficits, and then we use those results to make a plan that is specialized to each person. Treatments may include scanning or tracking exercises for vision and “brain games” such as story recall or word finding activities to improve cognition. We continually monitor progress and make adjustments throughout this process to maximize your results.
